Odds for the Kentucky Derby

And while we are betting on horses, I’ll bet you would never guess where that horse topiary at the top of this post came from. I made it! Never underestimate a girl with a glue gun and a dream! I wanted something that made a big impression for the center of the table and the pieces I found did not fit our budget. So I created a life-size horse out of newspaper and chicken wire and hot glued rolls of moss floral covering to him. It actually turned out so solid guests were sitting on top of him afterwards to take pictures!
Hats for Kentucky Derby
A Southern tradition that’s become a well-known staple of the race, derby hats come in all shapes and sizes. Check out this gallery of statement making hats and advice on how to choose the perfect piece.
Kentucky Derby Food
While the racehorses may be the big ticket, you simply can’t overlook one of the most popular Derby draws – the food spread! A few signature dishes are known to be crowd pleasers. Hot brown sliders, pimento cheese dip, bourbon meatballs and pecan pie with a twist.

Mint Julep Recipe
What would a derby celebration be without a signature cocktail to sip? The Mint Julep became the designated drink of the derby in 1938. Each year over 120,000 are served over the two-day event. In 2006 Churchhill Downs began offering $1000 Mint Juleps, premium spirits served up in gold-plated cups with silver straws.
Woodford Reserve is the “official bourbon” of the Kentucky Derby.
Party Ideas
Checkout a few shots from our Derby inspired parties of the past. I loved creating this stunning dessert table for a race day charity event. I found the white horse head statues at Home Goods and they made the perfect centerpieces alongside our bright florals and topiaries.
We filled jars with gourmet popcorn, cookies, donuts and cake bites. Licorice twists, lemonheads and jelly beans made for fun fillers keeping with the color scheme.
