Every year there’s that moment. The turkey is carved, the sides are steaming, someone is already reaching for a roll and everyone turns and looks at me. “Who’s saying grace?”
If you’ve ever frozen in that moment, I’ve got you. I put together my favorite Thanksgiving prayer ideas for every kind of table: short ones for hungry kids, heartfelt ones for family, a few for friendsgiving and one for the empty chair we all feel this time of year.

Screenshot your favorite, print it on a little card for each place setting or have the kids take turns reading. However you do it, a Thanksgiving prayer is the moment that turns a big meal into a real memory.
Why a Thanksgiving Prayer Matters
Table of Contents
Thanksgiving is the one holiday built entirely around gratitude. We spend weeks planning the perfect Thanksgiving dinner and styling the table, but the 30 seconds before we eat is what my kids actually remember. It slows everyone down. It gets the phones off the table. And it reminds us that the people around us are the real reason we cooked all that food.
You don’t need to be eloquent. A short Thanksgiving prayer said with your whole heart is more than enough.
Short Thanksgiving Prayers
These are perfect when the food is hot and the crowd is hungry.
1. A Simple Thanksgiving Grace
Lord, thank you for this food, this family and this day. Bless the hands that made it and the hearts that share it. Amen.
2. Grateful Hearts
Dear God, we come to this table with grateful hearts. Thank you for every blessing, the big ones and the small ones we forget to notice. Amen.
3. One-Line Thanksgiving Blessing
For food, for family and for faith, we give you thanks. Amen.
4. Before We Eat
Father, as we pass these plates and share this meal, may we also share kindness, laughter and love. Thank you for all you have given us. Amen.

For the years when the whole crew is under one roof.
5. Gathered Together
Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing us together around this table. Thank you for the grandparents who taught us, the parents who carried us and the little ones who keep us laughing. Bless our family, protect our home and help us carry this gratitude long after the dishes are done. Amen.
6. A Prayer for Our Home
Lord, thank you for the walls that hold our memories and the table that holds our feast. Fill this home with patience, peace and plenty of grace for one another. We are thankful for each person here. Amen.
7. Thankful for the Hard Years Too
God, not every year is easy, but you have been faithful through all of it. Thank you for getting us here. Thank you for the strength we didn’t know we had and the people who stood beside us. We are grateful. Amen.
If this year has been a heavy one, I keep a list of my favorite Bible verses for strength that you might want to share with someone at your table.
Thanksgiving Prayers for Kids
Kids love having a job on Thanksgiving. Let them lead one of these. They’re short, they rhyme and they’re easy to memorize.

Thank you for the friends we meet,
Thank you for the turkey too,
Thank you, God, for all you do. Amen.

14. For Those Far Away
Lord, be with the people we love who can’t be here this year: those traveling, those working, those serving and those far from home. Keep them safe and let them feel our love today. Amen.

15. The Little Things
God, thank you for the ordinary things we take for granted: warm coffee, clean water, a car that starts and a bed at the end of a long day. Open our eyes to the blessings hiding in plain sight. Amen.

Thanksgiving Bible Verses to Read at the Table
If your family likes to read Scripture before the meal, these Thanksgiving Bible verses are short enough to read aloud before anyone’s food gets cold.

Psalm 107:1
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
Psalm 100:4
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.
James 1:17
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Colossians 3:15

Ways to Make Your Thanksgiving Prayer Meaningful
Print prayer cards. Tuck a different prayer at each place setting and let guests choose who reads. My free Thanksgiving printable set pairs perfectly with this.
Go around the table. After the prayer, have everyone share one thing they’re thankful for. Keep it quick, but don’t skip the little ones. Their answers are always the best part.
Make it part of the tablescape. Write a short Thanksgiving blessing on a chalkboard sign or a kraft paper runner. You’ll find more ideas in my Thanksgiving table decor and centerpiece ideas and Thanksgiving decorating ideas.
Start a gratitude jar. Have guests drop a note in a jar when they arrive, then read a few aloud before dessert.
