A mini fridge and a small microwave are the main essentials when it comes to outfitting a college dorm. Beyond those two, it’s a matter of preference and portable goods. Dorm room essentials are one of those shopping categories that looks manageable until you actually sit down and make the list — and then suddenly you’re three hours deep in browser tabs, second-guessing whether your kid needs a mattress topper or a mattress pad or both, and wondering how anyone fits everything they need into a room the size of a large closet.

I have been through this. My oldest headed off to college a couple of years ago and I made every mistake available to a well-intentioned mom with a Target credit card and too much optimism. I bought things she never used, forgot things she needed immediately and learned more about twin XL bedding than any human being should have to know.

This is the list I wish I’d had. Everything your college student actually needs, organized by category, with nothing wasted.

Before You Shop: The Twin XL Reality Check

Here is the single most important thing to know before you buy a single item for a dorm room: most college dorm beds are twin XL, not standard twin. Twin XL is five inches longer than a regular twin, which means standard twin sheets will not fit and will slide off constantly. Buy twin XL everything for the bed, and double-check with the specific school whether they use any non-standard bed dimensions before purchasing.

Bedding Essentials

The bed is the most important piece of real estate in a dorm room. It’s where your kid sleeps, studies, scrolls, cries about midterms and recovers from every hard thing college throws at them. Getting the bedding right matters more than almost anything else on this list.
