I’m a DIYer at heart. I love getting creative and crafty, working from scratch or turning something old into something new. My son shares the same tinker mentality, he loves to take things apart and build his own creations. This week we found a place in Winston-Salem that’s basically the mothership for creatives…..
Mixxer Community Makerspace is a space where people can bring their ideas to life. They have all the tools to turn your creative concepts into reality and the workspace to put it all together. Everything from 3D printing, sewing, welding, screenprinting, woodwork, blacksmith, laser cutting, electronics and more are possible. And the Mixxer Community is there to help guide you along the way.
How Does It Work
Mixxer Community Makerspace provides access to Tech, Tools, and Community for members of all ages. Sign up for one of their monthly membership options and you have access to all the tools, workspace and training onsite. They offer individual, student, family and business memberships so you can choose which one best fits your individual needs. We chose the family option which includes membership access for two adults and two children. Passes are available for additional children as well. **Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
About the Space
After signing our family up we took a tour of the space to explore all the areas and tools. The entrance is bright and open with a welcoming vibe. The lighting is great, there’s comfortable seating and plenty of solid workspace to work on projects. On the left side there’s the Computer Lab where you have access to multiple computers and design software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, Onshape, etc. along with WiFi.
In the center area designated the flexible community space there are textile machines, screen printing machines and a sewing center with multiple stations. They have sewing machines that can handle basic sewing along with more powerful sewers for projects that require heavy-duty work.
To the right side of the building you’ll find the Tech Lab and outdoor space. The Tech Lab houses multiple 3D printing machines and a large laser cutter. I’m excited about all the things you could create in just this area alone! Imagine 3D printing gifts for friends, or laser printing engraved keychains, ornaments and leather pieces in whatever custom shapes you wish. Cake toppers, monogrammed pieces, door decorations, there are so many exciting ideas for things you can make!
You bring the supplies and the ideas and Mixxer will help you bring them to life. Have an idea but not sure what you need or how to make it? You can email the staff and they’ll walk you through the process and set-up a time to help guide you through the tools and how-to.
Outside of the Tech Lab there’s a relaxing community garden space along with a blacksmith area. Mixxer encourages people to try something new and never be too afraid to ask. They’re all about community support and shared creativity.
Recently Mixxer launched an initiative called “THRIVE!” where Mixxer works with nonprofit partners to pair people from the communities those nonprofits serve with mentors for a one on one learning lesson. They continue to work with community partner organizations to expand and serve more people and help establish a scholarship fund to give those in need access to Mixxer through financial assistance.
Mixxer also has a STEAM Education program that engages students in grades 6-12 to “Make Stuff Learn Stuff” and expand their unique learning opportunities.
Please visit the MIXXER Donation page and consider making a tax-deductible donation to help support their cause and community efforts. Your donation makes it possible for ordinary people to do extraordinary things!
To the back you’ll find the Wood Studio and Metal Studio. Here’s where you can really get your hands “dirty.” Welding, woodworking and cutting machines of all kinds are available to turn your supplies into pieces of art. Have an idea for a metal piece you want to create? Or maybe a custom piece of furniture for your home? Here’s where you’ll find all the tools and space you need to get it done. They also have all the safety equipment to work safely and have taken every precaution and protocol to clean and sanitize after each piece is used.
If you’re like me and feeling a little intimidated around power tools and equipment, no worries. The team at Mixxer will train you on the tools until you’re comfortable using them on your own. Training is included with every membership.
I’m so excited for our next visit and I have so many ideas for things to make! Starting with Christmas gifts and decorations. Brady is brainstorming all the gadgets he can make with 3D printing access. I’ll be pinning ideas for days!
