October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I’m partnering with the Breast Cancer Alliance to help raise money for breast cancer treatment and prevention. This is a sponsored post, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Recently I had lunch with a friend who shared that her mother had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I know a little of what she is going through. We lost my sister-in-law to breast cancer two years ago. As we talked about her worries and fears with her mother’s recent diagnosis we also began to name off people in our lives who were battling cancer and people we’ve lost. It was heartbreaking to realize that the list was so long. I left our lunch feeling so sad for my friend and the journey ahead for her family.

My sister-in-law lost her battle with breast cancer at far too young of an age. She left behind two beautiful young girls who were just entering their teen and preteen years, an age when you need your mother most. I know, because I lost my own mother to cancer at the age of thirteen.

Last year I reached out to the cancer center at our local hospital to find out how I could help. I was surprised to learn that the majority of their donations come from donors who make small donations. I had falsely assumed that the majority of their money must come from corporations and wealthy families who were able to write big checks. Turns out it’s you and me. People who have been personally touched by cancer and want to contribute in whatever way they can.

That idea changed so much for me. It made me realize the importance of making donations regularly and also encouraging and inspiring others to do the same. It also made me realize that generosity comes in so many shapes and forms, and it ALL matters!

So no matter what size your contribution, it makes a difference. Donating your time, your money and helping to spread the message can and will change the future for the 1 in 8 women diagnosed with breast cancer.
