A GSM of 400 to 500 is the sweet spot for a beach towel: soft enough to feel luxurious, substantial enough to actually absorb water but not so heavy it takes two days to dry.

Velour-finish oversized towels have that plush, almost velvety feel on one side that is perfect for lying face down in the sun. Terry on the back keeps it from sliding around on the sand. This combo is my personal favorite for pure lounging.

Turkish beach towels are the ones that have completely taken over the beach towel world in the last few years, and for very good reason. Made from Turkish cotton (specifically from the Aegean region), these flat-weave towels are lightweight, incredibly absorbent despite their thin profile, fast-drying and absolutely beautiful.

They start out a little stiff and get softer with every wash. After a few uses, they become this perfect balance of soft and substantial. They pack down to almost nothing in a beach bag, which makes them incredible for travel.

The aesthetic is undeniable too. The fringe edges, the striped patterns and the clean, simple designs look gorgeous on the beach and translate perfectly to a pool, a picnic or even as a lightweight throw on the couch.
