As a busy parent, I know how hard it can be to keep track of all the little moments and memories that make up our children’s lives. That’s why I want to share with you a simple practice that has made a huge difference in my own parenting journey: one line journaling.
So what is one line journaling? It’s exactly what it sounds like – taking just a moment each day to jot down a single sentence or phrase that captures something special or meaningful about your day with your child. It could be something as simple as “Watched my little one’s eyes light up at the sight of bubbles” or “Cuddled up with my kiddo for bedtime stories.”
At first, it might not seem like much. But over time, those little snippets add up to create a beautiful record of your family’s life together. And more than that, one line journaling can help you become a more mindful parent and find more joy in your everyday moments.
Here are just a few of the benefits I’ve experienced from one line journaling:
- It helps me stay present in the moment. When I know I’m going to be writing down something from my day with my child, I’m more likely to pay attention to the little things that might otherwise slip by unnoticed. I might take an extra moment to really savor the taste of the ice cream my little one is enjoying or to notice the way the sunlight filters through the leaves of a tree we’re walking past.
- It reminds me of the good stuff. As much as I love being a parent, it can also be really challenging at times. There are tantrums and sleepless nights and endless piles of laundry. But when I look back over my one line journal entries, I’m reminded of all the moments of sweetness and joy that make it all worth it.
- It creates a record of our family’s history. Years from now, when my children are grown and gone, I’ll be able to look back at these little snippets and remember all the silly, sweet, and surprising things that made up our family’s life together. I’ll be able to share these memories with my kids and with anyone else who wants to know more about our family.
So how do you get started with one line journaling? It’s easy – all you need is a notebook or a document on your phone or computer. Set aside just a few minutes each day to reflect on your day with your child and write down a single sentence that captures something special. Don’t worry about making it perfect or profound – just focus on capturing a moment that made you smile or feel grateful.
I hope this idea inspires you to start your own one line journal and find more joy and mindfulness in your parenting journey. Who knows what sweet memories you’ll be able to look back on in the years to come!
