Harry Potter party ideas and inspiration. We’ve created several fun Harry Potter parties to celebrate birthdays and movie premieres. Here are a few of our favorite ideas from the parties we’ve designed:
Harry Potter Party Decorations
How to recreate the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!
We used lots of black, gold and burgundy to set the scene for our Harry Potter parties. I made a trip to the dollar store to stock up on basic decorations like:
- plastic table cloths in black, gold and burgundy
- gold balloon weights for table decor
- gold plastic cups and platters for the centerpiece
I found cheap halloween decorations online that also worked perfect for setting the scene. An owl, some skeleton heads, gold glittery styrofoam balls, black tapered candles.

I stocked up on glass jars in all shapes and sizes as well to set up our spells and potions table and our Honeyduke’s candy shoppe.
Candies that work great for setting up Honeydukes Sweet Shoppe:
- gummy worms
- chocolate wrapped eyeballs
- Burts Beans
- gummy frogs
- wax teeth
- pixie sticks

Harry Potter Party Activities
If your kids are slightly older then you might need to think of some different activities like Truth or Dare to keep the party alive but these are perfect for the younger kids!
The Sorting Hat game
I ordered a sorting hat online and made these printable sorting cards for each of the Hogwarts school houses. We mixed them all up and each guest got to pull a card from the hat to find out which house they were assigned to.
Professor Snape’s Potion Class
This activity is so much fun! The kids love creating their own potions and mixing up magic. I used dollar store jars and containers. Leave a dozen empty for mixing and then fill 5 to 10 with any type of food of interesting thing you can find. Some ideas we’ve used:
- jars of black olives to look like eyeballs
- jars of vienna sausages look like fingers
- jars of giardino vegetables
- jars of marinated red peppers
- cauliflower in water with red food coloring looks like shrunken brains
- spaghetti noodles in colored water
Olivander’s Wand Shop – Making Magic Wands
Another fun activity the kids all loved, making their own wands. With some glow sticks, paper bags and cement glue you can easily make your own fun magic wands.

Playing a Game of Quidditch
We set-up a Quidditch style race and the kids had so much fun with this game! I ordered a few brooms online along with some grabber claws and used gold ornaments left over from Christmas. We set-up two teams and they took turns running with broom to one end, picking up a gold ball and returning to the starting point where they passed the broom and claw to the next team member. We also played dares and I found some great dare ideas on websites like https://myvessyl.com/dares/. It was super fun!
