Sharing easy ways to save money every day. This post is sponsored by Safeway, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
At the beginning of each year my husband and I set out a game plan for our goals. We lay out what our plans are for the year as well as how we can stay on target for our bigger goals: the three to five-year plans. Everything goes on the list, from buying a new car to taking vacations. Then we try to create a realistic plan for how we can make it all work.
This year we decided to take our son to Disney World for the first time in the fall. I LOVE Disney, but haven’t been since I was very young. My husband has never been, so it will be an exciting trip for everyone. We want to do all the things, stay at all the cool places and eat all the eats. So we learnt how to save money for our Disney Trip and we’ve been contributing, little by little each month. Wanting to save some money yourself? Saving money for the big things starts with looking at the little things. When you sit down to plan out a budget it’s easy to underestimate your true expenses. Track your daily spending for a couple of weeks and you’ll quickly see where the money goes. The little things like gas and food expenses add up; something you don’t consider very costly can end up being a big chunk when you total it all up for the month. This is where Safeway’s Gas Rewards program can come in handy helping us save money on gas while we shop.
After putting ourselves through a mini budget boot camp, we quickly realized that a large part of our spending falls in two categories: food and gas. We were spending waaaay too much money on food, between eating out too often and overspending on groceries. Filling up at the tank was taking a big bite out of our income as well.
So with all my newfound awareness of what wasn’t working, I set out to clean up our daily habits so we could turn all that wasteful spending into savings. We cut down our eating out at restaurants and opted for healthier meals at home.
Meal planning not only saved us money we were wasting eating out all the time, it saved us a ton of money with buying groceries. Instead of mindlessly wandering the grocery store and grabbing up any and everything that caught my eye, I created a shopping list for our weekly meal plan. Now, I browse through the Safeway paper and plan out our meals based on what’s on sale that week. It saves us soooo much money, hundreds of dollars! I’ve recently heard of Deals4boomers.com so I might start using that for discounts soon too.
I’ve also started using Safeway’s Gas Rewards program to save money on gas. With the Gas Rewards program, I can redeem up to $0.20 per gallon at participating Sunoco stations. You can redeem up to $1.00 per gallon in Gas Rewards at Safeway gas stations. So shopping at Safeway makes it easy for us to save on groceries and gas, giving us more money for our big Disney trip!
With only a few weeks to go we can hardly wait for Disney World! We are staying at the Animal Kingdom and I’ve made reservations at all the awesome restaurants. And since it’s the last week of October there are tons of fun Halloween themed things to do. It’s going to be so incredible to see Brady’s face light up when he meets all the characters. I have so many wonderful childhood memories of Disney World, I can’t wait for him to make some too!
You can enroll in Safeway’s Gas Rewards program at Safeway.com or by downloading the Safeway app, available for iOS and Android devices. The program recently expanded to Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
