It’s fall and all the kids are heading back to school. Our little guy was so excited for his first day and couldn’t wait to meet his new teacher and check-out his new classroom. Starting a new school year means talking to kids about all the important things that go along with transitions, new schools, new classrooms and new routines. Most importantly school safety!
Let’s talk about school bus safety, because it’s the first safety measure your child is likely to encounter when you send them off for the day. It’s important for parents to take precaution and talk to kids about safe practices.
According to the National Association of Pupil Transportation, school buses are the safest form of transportation to and from school. But the bus stop is also a very busy place. These basic guidelines will help keep kids safe:
School Bus Safety Tips
- When getting ready for school be sure to secure any dangling objects hanging from clothing, coats and bags.
- Walk younger children to the bus stop or have children walk in groups. Groups are easier for drivers to spot. Be sure to use the sidewalks and keep away from the street.
- Stand in a location where the bus driver can clearly see you. Also avoid playing with balls or toys that could roll into the road.
- Warn children that if they drop an object while getting on or off the bus they should never pick it up. Instead, alert the bus driver and wait for their instructions.
- Remind kids to look both ways before they step off the bus.
- Parents who wait to meet their child should wait on the side where they’ll exit the bus, not across the street.
Propane autogas vehicle systems are also designed with standard safety features like an automatic shut-off valve which prevents the flow of fuel to the engine when it’s not running, even if the ignition switch is in the “on” position. Buses fueled with propane autogas are also crash tested for impact in the side and rear areas. They meet rigorous U.S. FMVSS and motor vehicle safety standards.
While vehicle safety on school buses is paramount, sometimes the unthinkable can happen. If a child is suddenly taken from you in a tragic accident involving a bus, you may want to seek legal help from a wrongful death attorney to pursue justice for the loss of your loved one.
