A Kona Grill opened recently inside Fair Oaks Mall and I got to visit for lunch with a few other Northern Virginia family bloggers. I have never visited one of the popular chain’s restaurants so I had no idea what to expect. Walking in I was immediately impressed with the size and layout of the space. The entrance is spacious and bright with a nice, open area on the right that leads out to a large patio area. The left side is partitioned off by a beautiful water wall and leads into the main dining room. A full bar is central to the restaurant, along with a large open-view sushi bar by the kitchen.

The restaurant feels upscale and modern, with a great vibe and trendy atmosphere. There’s an enormous circular fish tank at the front as well that the kids were all completely in awe of. We were seated in the dining room area and greeted by the manager who explained the restaurant’s approach as well as taking us through some of their featured menu items.

One of the coolest things I liked about the Kona Grill was the focus on making families feel comfortable and cared for by going the extra mile. They handout Etch a Sketch toys for the younger crowd to play with at the table, something I had not seen before. Our table of kiddos were definitely into the Etch a Sketches and happily preoccupied while the parents had a chance to look over the menu.

As for the kids menu, it’s one of the best I’ve seen for kid friendly fare. Kids can choose an entrée served with two side selections and juice, milk or soda. Shrimp tempura, chicken satay, and sushi choices are on the entrée list as well as classic kid favorites like chicken tenders and cheeseburgers. And it’s all served up in a fun bento box!

I ordered one of Kona Grill’s most popular entrees for myself, the macadamia nut chicken. It came out looking incredible and tasting just as amazing. The house mashed potatoes and pineapple-papaya marmalade were delicious finishing touches to a filling, fabulous meal.

And for dessert, oh…. you really have to see it to believe me! I’m not sure the pictures completely do this insanely good, incredibly large slice of carrot cake justice. I probably should have held my arm up so you could get a full scale of how huge it really is. While the size of the cake made my eyes pop, the taste of this sweet treat was equally impressive. It’s rich and decadent, but also perfectly cakey and just a bit crunchy. All together just a delicious way to end a great meal.

I highly recommend Kona Grill as a great place to enjoy a meal with the whole family or just dining for two. I can’t wait to bring my husband back next time to try the sushi and sample some of their cocktail menu. Have you been to Kona Grill yet? What were your favorite bites
