Holiday traditions are part of the magic of this time of year, those moments you remember as a child and look forward to celebrating with your children. Baking cookies, going to see Christmas light displays, decorating our tree, those timeless traditions lots of kids enjoy. All of these bring back sweet memories and are a big part of why I LOVE the holidays so much, but I wanted to create new, special ways to celebrate too!

Holiday Pajamas
Last year we started our Christmas pajama tradition. It’s one that has become super popular on Instagram and Pinterest, cute kids and whole families all dressed up in their matching PJs are all over the place. It’s such an adorable way to incorporate a little festive fun into your bedtime routine. I love picking out a pair that Brady will wear all through December, and another special pair that’s just for Christmas Eve.

Reading Christmas Stories
My little loves to read, we read a few stories every night before bed. So picking out a new book is something I know he loves and something that has become a special thing we do together. There are a few classic holiday stories that I loved as a child and I’m excited to share them with him, like The Night Before Christmas and A Christmas Story. And a few that are popular holiday books for toddlers. We snuggle up on the floor with a few of his favorite stuffed friends and have storytime.

We spend a lot of time on the floor, whether it’s reading stories or playing pretend. Or building things, we build and build and build! I never imagined such a huge part of my life would be spent doing miniature construction work, assembling and reassembling blocks. I’m so happy for our carpeted floors, I never knew just how much I would come to appreciate carpeting. Not only is it warm and cozy, it also will keep you from going crazy from the sound of a thousand blocks being spilled out on the floor…again and again and again!

Santa’s Elf
If you’re a parent, this new tradition needs no explanation. It’s incredible how quickly the Elf idea has caught on, there are tons and tons of creative and clever ideas on the internet. I love it, it’s fun and a nice reminder that helps us reiterate the basics that we’re trying to teach our son. I’ll take all the help I can get in the toddler discipline department, so the little elf that reports mischief and bad behavior is a welcome guest in our house.

Mini Christmas Tree
We have our big ol’ Christmas tree that’s all decked out and twinkling in the family room, but I thought it would be kinda nice for B to have his own. We went to pick out a small one that he could decorate and keep in his room. And of alllllll the cute little trees he could’ve chosen, he picks this guy. I can’t knock it, I actually think it’s really cute. Now we have our very own sad little Christmas tree. It’s a sweet reminder though that sometimes it’s the simple things that make the holidays magical. We get all wrapped up in the shopping and spending, hustle and bustle of trying to squeeze as much holiday crazy into our busy schedules. It’s nice to get a reality check now and then that what makes Christmas truly special isn’t all that.
