Playground equipment provides more than just a place to play, it promotes child development and aids your child in learning important life skills through play. “Playground near me.” How many times have you googled that term? I know I have at least a hundred times. We love our local playgrounds, I couldn’t imagine what our days would be like without them. They are a part of our routine, where we meet up with old friends and make new ones.
On the playground, my son isn’t just a three-year-old working off some energy. He’s a pirate sailing the high seas in search of scallywags he’ll command to walk the plank. He’s a superhero climbing skyscrapers and sliding through tunnels at the speed of light. The playground is where his imagination comes to life as he braves each obstacle and navigates his way through the social networking of childhood.
Playgrounds are a place for play and learning, where children develop leadership, learn teamwork, perseverance, and where they build valuable social relationships. That’s why the global playground manufacturer Landscape Structures is partnered with University of Minnesota’s Institute of Childhood Development to research how play helps develop the whole child by creating leaders, encouraging collaboration, and teaching about the values of persistence and problem-solving. They’ve created this heartwarming video which celebrates the promise of our future as kids play and develop skills that shape them as adults on playgrounds.
Thinking back on my old playground days it’s sweet to relive memories of my own childhood as I watch my son in action. Somehow I think you never really outgrow the happy feeling you get when you push your feet off the ground and feel the wind hit your face, swinging higher and higher. Or the whoosh of sliding through a tunnel. It’s just amplified, a million times sweeter when you see that happiness radiate from your child.
